Durif is steadily growing in poularity, especially in the warmer wine regions. Tannat

In the winter wine guide in today's Age Epicure there is a review of Pepper Tree Grand Reserve Tannat.

The reviewers, Ben Canaider and Greg Duncan Powell seem to take a more inclusive view of what varieties make noteworthy wines. so they review 12 shirazes (inc 2 with viognier), 9 cabernets, 4 pinots, 8 blends (two include sangiovese) and 4 new varieties, a Petit verdot, a Barbera, Nebbiolo and a Tannat, as mentioned above. The boys at least give new wines more than a passing nod.

Heathcote wine region

The Heathcote wine region in Central Victoria has a great reputation for producing red wines from Shiraz. But there's a lot more happening, especially with Tempranillo, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. The Rhone White wine varieties, especially Marsanne and Viognier are also playing a role.

Travelling in the Granite Belt

I have just left Queensland after an interesting few days in the Granite belt region. There is a healthy alternative varietals scene there that you can see on my granite belt page. We visited Biorean, Ridgemill Estate, Kominos, Golden Grove, Granite Ridge, Symphony Hill and Hidden Creek. From A few tatsings it seems that Tempranillo is a variety with a future in the region. The Tannat at Biorrean was also very impressive.

We stayed in cabins at Ridgemill Estate. These were very cosy especially on the frosty mornings which are common in this region in the Autumn and winter
