The Hunter Valley is one of Australia's oldest wine regions. The most distinctive product is Hunter Semillon which makes a stunninng aged white wine. But there is plenty of other interesting wines in the region. Check out the link below to see what else the Hunter Wine Region has to offer.

Petit verdot

Petit verdot is a variety that is getting some serious attention in most of the warmer wine regions in Australia. James Halliday rates two PVs at 94 points; Anderson at Rutherglen and Pirramirra in the McLaren Vale are his top picks.

The variety is traditionally used in Bordeaux as a minor component in blends, but it is finding a new role as a straight varietal in Australia. There are about a hundred Australian Wineries using PV as a varietal or in blends so if you look out for it you might find some.

Gamay a red grape variety in the shadow of Pinot Noir

Gamay is one of those second fiddle wine varieties that have a small fan club but are ignored by most wine drinkers. Although it is an early ripening cool climate variety its distribution in Australia suggests that some people at least believe it to be more versitile.

It's still coming! But I'm travelling slowly!

I'm currently holidaying in WA. Features of the trip are in the W's
Wet Weather,
Windy Weather
Wine
Walking
Wildflowers
But most frustrating has been the WAITING for some action by the publishers on my book Emerging Varietal Wines of Australia.

Some wine highlights of the trip

West Cape Howe Viognier
Capel Vale Sangiovese
Tempranillo Graciano from The Grove
Happs varieties

Extracurricular activities include drinking some bloody good riesling, some wonderful lunches at wineries, chatting to helpful cellar door staff/winemakers and growers.

Coming soon a much revised wine regions section on the maing Vinodiversity site, a few new varieties, a report on the alternative varieites wine show, and with any luck THAT BOOK.

Don't forget you can really stay up to date by joining the newsletter mailing list. at Vinodiversity
