2007 Vintage in Australia

Frosts, bushfires, drought and heatwaves have all taken their toll on Australian winegrowers this season. Some vineyards have decided not to have a vintage at all in 2007. Overall yields are down dramatically. Others expect to have the highest quality for years, there is a vast mosaic of outcomes across Australia, but most agree it is an exceptional year.

As the picture unfolds comments from wineries will be collated on the following site. Winemakers are invited to send in brief reports on how 2007 panned out for them. What is the effect of the season on their yeilds and wine quality.

Gippsland wine region

The Gippsland wine region (or more correctly zone) is large and diverse. The vineyards are scattered among some of Victoria's most beautiful scenery. Think Wilsons Prom, the ninety mile beach, the mountains and high plains.

The wineries of the region will be on display at the Fed Square Wine Showcase Series on Wed and Thursday 4 and 5 April 2007. See you there.

Is this the biggest and the best wine festival in Australia? Well, you be the judge. It is certainly the festival with the biggest wines, following the region's tradition of producing heroic reds and fortifieds.

Horror vintage 2007

The 2007 Vintage in Australia looks like one to forget for many wineries. Chrismont in the King Valley have just announced that they will not be producing any wine for this vintage. Two heavy frosts in spring were followed by three bushfires around the vineyard. Elsewhere throughout Australia water shortages and frosts have devastated the crops. For example, my friends at Ridgemill Estate have lost all of their Tempranillo to frost.

On a brighter note, you have a chance to savour just what the King valley can produce given reasonable weather. On Friday March 16 there is a special dinner as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Details here.(pdf file) Or call 1800 801 065

Has anyone got any good news about the 2007 Vintage?
